Families across the country decorate and stage their porches and gardens with horror-themed scenes to celebrate Halloween on October 31. In 1984, American artist Cameron Jamie started photographing these front lawns in his old neighbourhood in a suburban area of Los Angeles. One aspect of what makes these photographs extraordinary is the fact that they were all shot during the day rather than at night, which changes the meaning and context of how we usually perceive the horror culture surrounding Halloween. Thus, Front Lawn Funerals and Cemeteries is not a book about Halloween, but rather about the opposing tensions of themes and imagery of death staged in these daylight domestic environments, which are at once very calm, humorous, violent, and uncanny. The two artists (Markus and Reto Huber) from Zurich draw the observer into a wonderfully luxuriant realm of images that they created using their virtuosic — analog — collage technique. A selection of collages and ink drawings from the large group of works titled MIKROUNIVERSUM (2005-2011) is presented in a relatively chronological order as a “guiding series” through the collected works. Other pieces are interjected between them which adopt aspects of the “guiding series” and transform into increasingly complex collages. In this way, as many as four reproductions from various groups of works are interwoven into new picture compositions. Thus the book shows not only a representative view of what was created over the last four years, but also gives an illuminative impression of huber.huber’s artistic work methods. A picture register listing each individual work and presenting it again in miniature format adds clarity, helping to unscramble the original pieces and place huber.huber’s individual groups of works and periods of creativity into a clear order.

But it is not only through their collages and drawings that the artists have gained attention over the last few years. Their sculptural works and installations have also drawn considerable interest. Their work revolves around the ambivalent relationship between civilization and nature and at the same time addresses social topics and central themes of the human collective such as hope, fear, faith and failure. With quiet irony and a touch of the comic, they create marvelous scenarios in which giant colorful butterflies encounter miniature lovers — idyllic scenes in which the abysmal depths are always lurking nearby. Thanks to Edition Patrick Frey (Zurich).

280 pages, 21 × 30.4 cm, hardcover, Edition Patrick Frey (Zurich).

This book shows everyday life in the most varied corners of the African continent, one that does not exist in the coverage provided by Western media. There is nothing spectacular or sensational about this everyday life, but it is always there. The point of departure for this series was the countless invitations to exhibitions and other art events that the artist found in his mailbox every day – documentary evidence, as it were, of the day-to-day art scene. Müllenbach has transposed this documentation, which heavily influences his work as it is, into pictures, or more precisely watercolors, of his own. From Dürer to van Gogh, Swiss to foreign artists, figurative treatments to abstract color compositions, these works play on their recognizability. Müllenbach’s “semi-originals” are neither forgeries nor copies, but unusual interpretations or, in the artist’s own words, “handmade appropriation”. Portraits 1982, 1988, 1997 is now considered a classic. In 2014, 32 years after having taken the very first pictures of her subjects, Davatz resumed this long-term conceptual project and shot a new round of portraits of the same cast of characters. Back in 1982 she had taken frontal-only shots of a dozen pairs of young people – lovers, friends or relatives, as the case may be – looking straight at the camera, against a light-gray backdrop in her photo studio. She cast a sober and conceptual, but nonetheless sympathetic, eye on the personal and collective details of her subjects and their poses. In 1988, 1997 and once again in 2014, Davatz got back in touch with the same subjects and, employing the same formal approach to their portrayal, documented continuities and discontinuities, changes in their relationships and in the ways they present themselves to the world. Based on the original 12 double portraits, she was able to draw up relationship charts tracking – depending on changes of partner – up to 16 pairs or subjects over time.

Their ranks have swelled over the years, with the addition of 14 children and even some grandchildren in the meantime, so the project now covers three generations. Other themes have long since been added to the original one of self-presentation. Without revealing any specific personal information, the series narrate a wide array of changes – physical, biographical and sartorial – over time. They tell of separations, of aging and loss, of the growth of families and the inheritance of family traits. But also of current urban society in each period. Davatz’s work is, in a word, about making visible the passage of time – and what it does to us. This book is a very straightforward and yet epic long-term observation of an urban milieu. In Sullivan’s imagery, which dispenses with any chronological order, the underground scene, the cultural elite and high society are always very close together, as are surface and abyss, the lust for life and the transience of youth. They are unabatedly existential in their painstaking observation of casual beauty, desire and love in their every facet – between family members, lovers, fly-by-night acquaintances and kindred artistic spirits. Sullivan succeeds in doing wholly without shock effects, voyeurism, irony and maudlin melancholy. For his study Stejskal biked across large swaths of southern and eastern Finland as well as Estonia for a month or two every year from 1929 to 1937 and then again in 1948, equipped with two bellows cameras and a box of photographic glass plates. On these excursions he systematically collected information about the traditional games, or “folk athletics” as he calls them, which were hardly practiced anymore even then. For the most part elderly farmers and craftsmen would tell him in detail about the exercises and tests of strength and courage with which they had tried to prove their virility in their younger days. According to these descriptions, their sons, relatives and farm hands were asked to perform the exercises in front of the camera so Stejskal could photograph them. During his field research, which took over 20 years, Stejskal amassed a considerable collection of documentation, which he divided up into 11 different sections, one for each excursion. It comprises over two thousand handwritten pages of travelogs, descriptions of exercises, tables, sketches, musical and phonetic recordings and 433 photographs. This book focuses on a small selection of those photographs. Brilliantly published by Edition Patrick Frey (Zurich).

120 pages, 25.5 × 35 cm, hardcover, Edition Patrick Frey (Zurich).

Gina Bucher - Female Chic. For two years the shop hardly drew any business, until in 1974 Vogue magazine wrote rapturously about the avant-garde fashion in Oberdorf. The three fashion shows that followed were the talk of the town, bolstered by headlines about international movie stars outfitted by Ursula Rodel and Sissi Zoebeli, as well as plenty of urban legends – which, unfortunately, can’t all be cleared up within the scope of this book. For who these women from Thema Selection were varies from one account to the next: sometimes it was the same configuration for years, then the lineup changed again. The official membership of this creative undertaking was never decisive, it was a shared can-do business credo that really mattered. The backdrop to the history of this avant-garde enterprise is recounted here by the shop’s founders as well as their companions along the way, who were then, and remain to this day, part of that special zest for life. Dramaturgy and choreography often follow a similar pattern: catwalk runs of the candidates, film portraits, PowerPoint slide shows, a statement about the situation of the world today and performances by local music groups. In the course of the success of the Miss Switzerland pageant at the end of the 90s and at the beginning of the year 2000, a lot of local beauty contests started appearing. There are hardly as many contests of this nature in any other Western industrial nation. To be Miss Switzerland, queen of beauty queens – attaining, during her year in office, a celebrity status, which anywhere else would only be granted to people of the nobility and international superstars– is the dream of many young women. They want to win; they want to be the best, the prettiest, the most talented and the most intelligent. At the end, there are some future possibilities for fame and the hope of a career jump. With his little Canon he could shoot away without intention, without prescribed subject or theme, much the way we take pictures with cell phones today. Schumacher spent the first half of 1972 in England, where he’d been teaching photography at an art school for 18 months.
