The catalogue traces the development of the ArtLine Milano project. ArtLine Milano is a public art initiative promoted by the Municipality of Milan, created with the aim of establishing an open-air contemporary art park within the CityLife district. Launched in 2014 and curated by Roberto Pinto and Katia Anguelova, the project forms part of the broader urban redevelopment of the former Fiera di Milano area, now transformed into a new residential, commercial, and cultural hub.
Following a public competition in 2015, eight works by artists under 40 were selected to join those of internationally recognised artists invited directly by the curators. The selected under-40 artists are: Riccardo Benassi, Rossella Biscotti, Linda Fregni Nagler, Shilpa Gupta, Adelita Husni-Bey, Wilfredo Prieto, Matteo Rubbi, and Serena Vestrucci. Artists invited by the curators include Mario Airò, Jeremy Deller, Alfredo Jaar, Elisabetta Benassi, Judith Hopf, Liliana Moro, Maurizio Nannucci, Otobong Nkanga, Adrian Paci, Kiki Smith, and Pascale Marthine Tayou. Today, the park hosts nineteen permanent installations, freely accessible to the public, underscoring the role of public art in fostering engagement, breaking down barriers, and challenging elitist perceptions.
A further defining aspect of ArtLine is its contribution to the enhancement and regeneration of urban space. Integrating artistic practice into urban planning encourages dialogue between contemporary art and the communities who inhabit and visit the city. In doing so, Milan positions itself as an increasingly inclusive and inviting environment, where art becomes a source of unexpected encounters and a daily presence within the urban fabric.
