'Music in the Room of Grief emerges from the loss of a close friend with whom I used to play the violin. Photographing her most cherished belongings, such as her violins, handwriting, clothing, and jewelry, I sought to gather evidence of her existence by recording traces of her touch and shadows of her presence. These objects reflect her lifelong search for identity as a Korean adoptee in America and her attempt to construct a sense of home through music.
Through photograms and collages derived from these still-life images, which were originally photographed in a forensic manner, I reflect on my own experience of grief while reinterpreting her story as an act of remembrance and celebration.' –JYK
