KNOWN is a series of publications that promotes and celebrates contemporary Indigenous Australian artists, facilitating cross-cultural dialogue between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and writers. KNOWN elevates and amplifies First Nations voices; strengthening cultural knowledge, language, and artistic engagement. The KNOWN series is designed to foster knowledge exchange within communities and acknowledges contemporary Indigenous Australian artists on both national and international stages.
Sonja Carmichael and Elisa Jane Carmichael are Ngugi women from Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) in Queensland. Their work is informed by their family’s deep spiritual and cultural connections to the land and seas of Quandamooka Country. Sonja works specifically in the medium of fibre basketry and woven sculpture, and focuses on the regeneration of traditional weaving techniques. Elisa Jane (Leecee) Carmichael is a multi-disciplinary artist who works across the mediums of painting, textiles, and weaving. Together, their collaborations extend into image-making, using cyanotypes to share stories connected to family and Country.
